Cairo is situated on the Nile banks on the longitude 30?6ط¢آ´ eastward and 31?26ط¢آ´ northward.The history of Cairo dates back to the Islamic conquest by `Amr bin Al-`As 21 A.H. It was the custom of Muslims to found new capitals in the countries they conquered, choosing for them locations that they deemed viable to the cause of Islam.`Amr bin Al-`As founded the city of Al-Fistat northern Babylon citadel, where the Muslim forces first camped.When the Abbasids assumed caliphate, they founded another capital of their emerging state northeastern Al-Fistat, which was called Al-Hamraأ¢â‚¬â„¢ Al-Quswa.Al-Fadl bin Salih then founded the city of Al-`Askar, which was eventually subjoined to Al-Fistat.Ahmad bin Tulun then founded the city of Al-Qataأ¢â‚¬â„¢i` in 256 A.H., influenced by the structure of the city of Samarra.When the Fatimids seized Cairo, the commander Jauhar Al-Siqilli founded the city of Cairo in 359 A.H. and surrounded it with a wall of bricks, taking the form of a square, whose sides are 1200 yards long on an area of 340 feddan.Cairo was famous for its stately buildings, since it was reconstructed in succession by the Fatimid, Aiyubid and Mamulk dynasties.Expansion and construction continued in Cairo, especially in the reign of Salah Al-Din Al-Aiyubi.The Mosque of `Amr bin Al-`As and Al-Azhar Mosque are examples of Cairoأ¢â‚¬â„¢s excellent monumental features. Throughout ages, Cairo has been famous for the several mosques built there. It was the first city in Africa to which Islam was introduced.There was a great interest to build mosques in Cairo, in so much as it was called the City of the One Thousand Minarets.There were many marketplaces, hospitals, gardens, libraries and schools built in Cairo in ancient times, especially during the reign of Salah Al-Din Al-Aiyubi.Many celebrities in different fields lived in Cairo. In the field of juristic studies, Imam Al-Shafi`i, the founder of the Shafi`i Juristic School, was one of the prominent scholars. There were also Al-Laith bin Sa`d, the Imam of Egypt and Abu Al-Qasim `Abdul-Rahman bin `Abdullah, who was a historian and scholar of Hadith.In the field of linguistic studies, Jalal Al-Din Al-Siuti was a famous scholar, besides his praiseworthy efforts in the fields of Hadith studies, jurisprudence, Tafisr and Qurأ¢â‚¬â„¢anic studies. There was also Ibn Manzhur, the compiler of Lisan Al-`Arab Dictionary, Al-Zubaidi, the compiler of Taj Al-`Arus Dictionary, Al-Maqrizi, Ibn Hisham, Ibn Hajar, etc.Among prominent physicians who lived in Cairo, there was Dawud Al-Antaki, Muwaffaq Al-Din Abu Nasr, who was called Ibn Al-`Ain Al-Zarbi.In the field of mathematics and geometry, there was Ibn Al-Haitham, who was a physicist and ophthalmologist and Ibn Yunus, who was an astronomer.
